The HP Photosmart C4180 printer comes equipped with a flatbed scanner installed in the upper portion of the device, capable of capturing images at a maximum resolution of 2400-by-4800 dots per inch. This feature allows you to digitize photographs or printed text for use on a connected computer. For simple scans, operating the device via its control panel usually proves sufficient. If you need to crop, resize or otherwise clean up a scan, however, using the software provided by HP may generate better results.
Preparation
1.
Raise the plastic cover located on the printer's upper panel, to the right of the control panel.
2.
Examine the scanner glass and locate the icon printed in the lower-right corner. Place your document face down on the glass.
3.
Position the upper-left corner of the printed side over the icon on the scanner glass. Lower the plastic cover.
Scan via Control Panel
1.
Examine the control panel, located on the left side of the printer's top panel. Find the second row of buttons from the bottom. Press the first button in this row, also known as the Start Scan button, to bring up the scan menu in the printer's LCD display.
Find the arrow buttons, located just below the LCD display. Use the up and down arrows to cycle through the list of applications shown on the LCD display. Select the application you wish to use to open the scanned image.
3.
Press the 'OK' button, located in the center of the arrow buttons. Wait for the printer to generate a preliminary scan, which it displays on your computer. Review the scan and make any desired changes to the scan settings.
4.
Click the 'Accept' button displayed on your computer's screen. Wait for the printer to generate a final scan of your document. Raise the plastic cover and retrieve your document from the scanner glass. Lower the plastic cover back into place.
Scan via Software
1.
Launch the HP Solution Center or HP Scan application. Select the 'Scan Picture(s)' option if you are going to scan an image. Select the 'Scan Document(s)' option if you are going to scan a page of text.
2.
Click on the 'Change Settings' or 'Profile Settings' option. Review the displayed settings and make any desired changes. Click on the 'Scan' button and wait for the device to finish scanning your document.
3.
Raise the plastic cover and retrieve your document from the scanner glass. Lower the plastic cover back into place.
Tip
- If you are using a Macintosh, you can also scan documents via the Image Capture application; select the printer from the list of connected devices to bring up the scan window.
